Baby Reflux

baby-reflux.jpgUnderstanding Of Reflux
All babies are born with a weak valve at the top of their stomach, which strengthens as they grow. It is common for most babies to experience mild reflux symptoms (regurgitation) after a feed. When a baby continually brings back up an excessive amount of milk, they lose weight, persistently cough or refuses feeds, it could be an indication they may be suffering from reflux.

Reflux is very common; it affects around 1 in 2 babies under 10 months. The chance of a baby suffering from reflux decreases in babies aged 10 months and older, thus affecting around 1 in 20 babies.

What Causes Reflux?
Reflux is caused when the weak valve at the top of their stomach allows their milk and gastric acid to come back up, therefore causing symptoms including heartburn and vomiting. As the baby gets older the valve, which stops food from going down their oesophagus, will strengthen and the risk of reflux will decrease.

Reflux Signs To Look For:
- If the reflux is happening on a regular basis, more than 5 times a day
- If they do not settle and cries excessively after a feed
- If they refuse feeds
- If they are excessively or projectile vomiting
- If they persistently cough
- If they arch their back or are agitated during feeds
- If they lose weight, or cannot gain weight
- If they scream or cry as though they are in pain

If your baby suffers from any of these symptoms, it is recommended that you speak to your doctor or health visitor
